Award-winning Australian composer Dale Cornelius has officially announced his forthcoming project, ‘What Is Carried, What Is Left Behind?’. This collection serves as a significant departure from his extensive background in screen composition, signaling a pivot toward a more personal and introspective musical landscape. Developed in partnership with the Melbourne-based ensemble Eclective Strings, this six-track album explores themes of memory, place, and renewal through an immersive blend of string quartet arrangements, synthesizers, and found sound, all presented in a high-fidelity Dolby Atmos Spatial Audio mix.
The creative foundation for ‘What Is Carried, What Is Left Behind?’ emerged from a spontaneous recording captured in Montalcino, Italy. While walking past the Concattedrale di San Salvatore, Cornelius recorded the distinct sound of a metal door shifting in the wind. This evocative, percussive noise provided the primary sonic motif for the album’s title track and ultimately dictated the conceptual direction of the entire record. By utilizing Dolby Atmos technology, Cornelius has reconstructed the exact spatial experience of that Italian evening, effectively positioning the listener within a soundscape where strings and synthesizers are arranged to mirror the environment of the initial recording.
At the emotional center of the record is ‘A Whispered Dawn (Spencer’s Lullaby)’, a string quartet composition with a profound history. Written in 1999 during a time of extreme personal crisis, the piece was composed while the artist’s first-born son, Spencer, faced life-threatening health challenges. Born at 27 weeks after becoming one of the first infants in Australia to undergo in utero surgery, Spencer spent three months in intensive care. Though the composition has existed as a manuscript for 26 years, ‘What Is Carried, What Is Left Behind?’ finally grants this intimate work its first formal recording.
Scheduled for release in October 2026, the album marks a pivotal new chapter in the career of Dale Cornelius.
