Glaswegian songwriter Crawford Mack is poised to make a significant impact with his upcoming single, “Don’t Play The Victim,” which is set for release on May 15th. Renowned for his playful yet precise songwriting, Mack skillfully merges personal narratives with societal reflections, offering listeners profound insights into contemporary issues.

In this latest endeavor, Mack confronts male dynamics by critically examining the femme fatale trope. He articulates how this narrative frame typically positions strong women as antagonists in the tales of men, inadvertently elevating male characters, even during their downfalls. Mack states, “This one started as a reckoning with the femme fatale trope; specifically the way it frames a powerful woman as the villain of an arrogant man’s story while quietly flattering the man even in his defeat.”

The song intricately portrays a variety of male personas, including Tom, who receives bold truths, and Billy, whose inflated sense of self leads to downfall. Meanwhile, Dan and Luke are depicted in a more critical light. The provocative refrain, “Don’t play the victim,” challenges the longstanding portrayal of female villains, flipping the narrative back onto these men. Mack asserts, “The femme fatale trope always frames the woman as the problem… The song is about what happens when a woman is simply categorically better than the men around her, and those men can’t process that without feeling victimised.”

Musically, “Don’t Play The Victim” features a relentless soundscape, highlighted by a powerful riff created from a mix of unconventional guitar tones, enriched by rhythmics derived from aerosol cans. Collaboratively written with producer Rory James and incorporation of Alex Reeves of Elbow on drums, the track showcases a unique sonic palette. Additionally, the music video directed by Eilidh Loan vividly captures the protagonist’s struggles as he revisits critical memories leading up to his divorce, encapsulating the complex interplay between personal reflection and emotional turmoil.
