Crawford Mack, an emerging Glaswegian songwriter, has recently released his latest single, “Back From The Brink,” the second offering from his eagerly anticipated EP titled “Panic Attack.” This powerful track delves into humanity’s quest for divine intervention amidst the chaos of life, posing profound questions surrounding faith and morality in a turbulent world.
The sonic landscape of “Back From The Brink” begins with a lo-fi filtered folk essence that gradually evolves into a deeper atmosphere heightened by dark bass synths and ticking, clock-like drums, creating a sense of urgency and reflection. Mack’s soft, restrained vocals juxtapose the sweeping, piano-laden choruses, encouraging listeners to contemplate the urgent message encapsulated in the refrain, “back from the brink.”
Inspired by a striking photograph of the Christ the Redeemer statue in San Salvador, which appears as if the figure is reaching for the moon, Mack’s lyrical narrative addresses the idea of questioning a higher power regarding the corruption and violence executed in the name of divinity. This approach draws a connection between historical grievances and present-day conflicts, embodying an agnostic tone that serves more as a heartfelt plea for understanding rather than a declaration of disbelief.

Co-produced by Jamie Evans and Rory James, “Back From The Brink” also features acclaimed drummer Alex Reeves from Elbow, with meticulous mastering by Matt Colton at Metropolis Studios. The accompanying music video, filmed at the atmospheric Asylum Chapel in Peckham, depicts a handcrafted replica of a stained-glass window from Glasgow Cathedral—originally installed by Mack’s five-times great-grandfather, David Kier. The video strikingly conveys the theme of hope dimming, as light gradually recedes from the panes, symbolizing the artist’s desire for hope to persist within humanity’s story.
Mack reflects on his creative process, stating, “I started writing this after seeing a photograph of the Christ the Redeemer statue in San Salvador. The angle of the shot made it look as though his hand was reaching for the moon, and something about that image stuck with me. I began writing from the perspective of someone putting questions to their maker. Not angry questions, more like the kind you’d ask if you believe someone might answer… I wanted to ask why nobody’s intervening, while knowing that the question itself might be naive.” This introspection encapsulates the essence of “Back From The Brink,” inviting listeners to engage with deeper existential inquiries.
As anticipation builds for the full release of his EP, “Panic Attack,” fans of Crawford Mack can look forward to more intricate storytelling fused with complex themes.
