The landscape of modern R&B sees a significant addition today as Connecticut-born Nigerian American artist AFRICAINE officially releases her debut EP, For Me, This Time. This project marks a pivotal moment for the independent musician, serving as a comprehensive portrait of her artistic evolution, blending foundational R&B and soul roots with distinct afropop sensibilities. By synthesizing her gospel upbringing, a tri-state New York perspective, and her Southeastern Nigerian heritage, AFRICAINE has cultivated a sound that is as culturally resonant as it is deeply personal.

Throughout the eight-track collection, AFRICAINE navigates the complex emotional spectrum of personal growth, moving through themes of heartbreak, grief, affirmation, and joy. Her creative process reflects this thematic diversity. While much of the record was cultivated within her own home studio, the track ‘Whatever’ was developed in Los Angeles during a series of instinctive, live-recorded sessions alongside GRAMMY-nominated producer Rob Aragón. The production demonstrates a willingness to experiment; for instance, the song ‘Before’ was composed and recorded entirely without instrumental backing to ensure the raw narrative remained the primary focus. Additionally, the title track, ‘For Me, This Time,’ was crafted from the atmospheric production of TUC, known for his collaborative work with artists such as Wizkid and Oxlade.
The project highlights include the self-assured anthem ‘Whatever,’ which champions confidence and inner value, and the emotionally candid ‘Burn,’ which explores the aftermath of a relationship’s end. The track ‘Give It Away’ features a notable contribution from JUNO Award-nominated musician Nonso Amadi, further elevating the EP’s melodic warmth. Drawing inspiration from luminaries such as Alicia Keys, Jazmine Sullivan, Tiwa Savage, and Amaarae, AFRICAINE has created a project that establishes a firm sense of ownership over her artistry. With this release, she continues her commitment to empowering women to create without boundaries and to pursue their goals with conviction, marking a compelling introduction to her future career.
