Garry ‘Magpie’ Bowler has redefined a classic with the release of ‘The In Crowd’ — a dynamic reworking of the Billy Page original that rises as both an homage to artistic individuality and a tribute to Motörhead frontman Lemmy Kilmister.

More than just a modern cover, ‘The In Crowd’ was originally imagined as a lyrical thank-you to those who keep original music alive. But with the approaching ten-year anniversary of Lemmy’s passing in 2025, Bowler deepened the song’s meaning, turning it into a personal expression of gratitude and a salute to enduring influence.

Joining Bowler on this unique project are notable figures tied to Lemmy’s world. Alan Davey, formerly of Hawkwind, delivers the basslines. Wayne Kramer, legendary guitarist of MC5, lays down powerful guitar work after hearing only the drums and bass. Tragically, his contribution would become one of his last studio sessions. Enid Williams, a founding member of Girlschool — a band intertwined with Motörhead’s journey — adds powerful and emotive vocals.

Bowler’s own history with Motörhead stretches back decades, including his participation in sessions for March Or Die in 1992. That deep connection resonates in the layers of the song, especially in its unique construction: it began with a solo drum recording, allowing each contributor to build upon it freely.

Kramer’s reaction at the end of his session summed up the spirit behind the track: “The track ROCKS!” With revamped lyrics, Bowler’s version of ‘The In Crowd’ serves as a compelling reminder of the value of originality, and the creative voices who keep it alive.
