Kulyk explores emotional vulnerability in “Western Wind” and revisits The Judds’ legacy.
Kalsey Kulyk’s new release brings together heartfelt storytelling and country tradition with “Western Wind” and a timeless cover of “Grandpa (Tell Me ‘Bout The Good Old Days)” by The Judds. Released via Universal Music Canada, the two-track set highlights her growth as both a songwriter and interpreter.
The deeply personal “Western Wind” addresses emotional caution in relationships. “Western Wind was a song that I started myself and had to walk away from because I wanted to give it my all,” says Kulyk. “So a month later I was in Nashville in the writers room with Patricia Conroy and Dave Thomson and I threw this song out there and they loved it.”
The second track sees her revisit a childhood favorite with a nostalgic cover. “‘Grandpa’ was a song I used to sing all the time as a little girl,” Kulyk recalls. “Every time I hear this song or it pops in my head it feels like a warm blanket reminding me of my childhood.”
Following her previous tributes to Lee Ann Womack and The Chicks, this release continues Kulyk’s tradition of honoring the greats who shaped her voice.
This fall, Kulyk will take the stage with Wynonna Judd at the Energetic County Fair. Originally from Hudson Bay, Saskatchewan, Kulyk brings sincerity and timeless appeal to everything she records.
