In her own words, Gordi introduces ‘Like Plasticine’, with ‘Your Consolation Prize’ and songs shaped by care and courage.
Gordi invites listeners into ‘Like Plasticine’ by speaking directly to the heart of the project.
“Today, as I finally set this album free, I am reminded of its beginning. Deep in the middle of the pandemic I began writing the songs that would make up ‘Like Plasticine’, wondering what the purpose of music was at all. I tried to stop thinking and just feel. When I look back on that time now, sitting in Phoenix Central Park surrounded by things I could make music with, I see ‘Like Plasticine’ arriving as though it was a fire hydrant erupting. Everything we try to contain comes out one way or another. So when you listen to this record, un-contain yourself, stop thinking, and just feel. – Gordi”
Her third album arrives after a joyful rush of shows and sessions, from touring with Foster The People across Europe to festival stages at Lollapalooza and Hinterland Festival, and visits to The Kelly Clarkson Show, CBS Mornings, and KEXP. With a short return to Australia before more travel, she offers a record built on honesty and hope.
Across 12 songs, ‘Like Plasticine’ traces the last few transformative years. Gordi shares the experience of coming out and carefully reshaping her future, and she writes from the perspective of someone who served as a doctor during the pandemic. The result is a collection that embraces the fragile and the strong parts of being human, letting both breathe.
A centerpiece arrives with ‘Your Consolation Prize’. Co produced by Brad Cook, whose work includes Snail Mail, Jensen McRae, and Bon Iver, the song gently recalls synth pop favorites, pairing drum machines with a soft choir. It reflects on how, even with greater acceptance and closeness after coming out, young queer people may still encounter asterisks attached to their lives.
The tracklist also includes ‘Peripheral Lover’, ‘Cutting Room Floor’, ‘PVC Divide’ featuring Anaïs Mitchell, and ‘Lunch At Dune’. ‘Like Plasticine’ is an invitation to feel fully, to find comfort, and to carry these songs forward.
