The making of ‘GOD IS A DJ’ from sketch to identity with Dani Thorne, CRUNCHi and CRAY

Creators tell the story of ‘GOD IS A DJ’, from August 2024 origins to a rebuilt cut, and a church set video that seals it.

This chapter centers the creators and their words. The single ‘GOD IS A DJ’ pairs Dani Thorne and CRUNCHi with CRAY on a cut that carries industrial Techno force. Thick kicks and gritty textures set the frame, and a hypnotic lead vocal keeps the focus tight. A witty, sultry edge and a hardstyle infused drive sustain the intensity. The theme lifts up the father, son and Holy Rave, while the song collapses the border between sacred and profane so the moment resolves on a dark, sweaty floor with a divine, feminine DJ. On camera, the idea plays out as three girls make their way into an underground rave inside a run down church.

CRUNCHi adds; ‘“GOD IS A DJ” started back in August 2024 as a raw idea I sketched out and sent over to Dani Thorne. That first version became a track called “Tight Dress” and from there, we went through a bunch of different versions trying to capture the right energy, the right message, and the right feeling.

After sitting with it for a while and exploring a few different directions, we made the collective decision to scrap the original vocals and rebuild the track from the ground up. That’s when we brought in CRAY as a vocalist and the moment her vocals hit the track, everything changed. The song finally felt like it had found its identity.

From underground warehouse sets to massive festival stages, “GOD IS A DJ” has become one of the most powerful records in our sets, not just because of the sound, but because of the story behind it. This song is a celebration of the sacred chaos of the rave.’

Dani Thorne shares; “When Cray came up with the line “God is a DJ”, we knew right away that’s the theme we were going to run with. While the instrumental had been done and played out by Crunchi and I months before, when the writing session started with Cray, a whole new theme was born and we knew we wanted to revisit the production to hone in on this idea of GOD IS A DJ. Which to be honest, is very in line with how it feels to be in the dark, sweaty underground with 100s of like-minded strangers, dancing and expressing ourselves freely. The rave is our version of church, and we connect through music.”

It’s clear that “GOD IS A DJ” is both a banger and a mantra.
