Behind “Can’t Escape A Broken Heart”
Cecilia Castleman shared her thoughts on the collaboration, saying, “I first discovered Benjamin’s music when I was 15 years old, and my parents had just split up. His music helped me cope with it all. Fast forward about six years, and I was writing with the talented Jack McManus when he asked if Benjamin could join. It was such a full circle moment for me. Over two years, ‘Can’t Escape A Broken Heart’ kept coming up in conversation, and I’m so ready to release it into the world. I’m grateful for people like Benjamin, who keep the emotional integrity of the song intact. We finished the song in Nashville with producer Doug Showalter, who brought our vision to life.”
Benjamin Francis Leftwich added, “Meeting, working with, and learning from Cecilia over the past few years has been a joy. There is a purity and honesty in her performances that really hit my heart. We wrote ‘Can’t Escape A Broken Heart’ in two hours over a Zoom call during the pandemic. Initially, we overproduced it, but thanks to the emotional insight of our co-writer Jack, we returned to its original acoustic and vocal simplicity. Doug Showalter instinctively understood the vibe, and we recorded the final version in his Tennessee studio. I really love this song.”
