Norwegian composer Eivind Buene returns with his latest album, *Personal Best*, available now via LAWO Classics. This compelling release serves as an innovative exploration of memory, identity, and the evolution of musical history, positioning Buene as a significant figure in contemporary classical music.

At the heart of *Personal Best* lies a groundbreaking six-part “trio portrait,” crafted in collaboration with the esteemed Trio Accanto and SWR Experimentalstudio. This album uniquely blends live performances with recorded conversations, providing an intimate look into the artistic journeys of the ensemble members: saxophonist Marcus Weiss, pianist Nicolas Hodges, and percussionist Christian Dierstein. Buene intricately weaves their voices and stories into sound, elevating them beyond mere performers to become integral characters within the musical narrative.

The album presents a series of original sound collages that intertwine personal storytelling with an expansive musical landscape, all while integrating sophisticated live electronics. The diverse array of sounds ranges from meditative harmonies to deeply emotional expressions, encapsulating complex themes of time and artistic identity. Buene describes this experience as “telescopic listening,” inviting listeners to fluidly navigate between the past and the present.

In addition to the primary compositions, *Personal Best* features *Serious Songs*, Buene’s reinterpretation of Johannes Brahms’ *Four Serious Songs*. Embracing the role of vocalist, Buene amalgamates contemporary sensibilities with Romantic traditions, singing these adaptations in English to convey a sense of authenticity and emotional depth. His approach challenges classical conventions while maintaining a sense of vulnerability.

Buene’s artistry reflects what he terms “embodied history,” striving to blur the boundaries between performer and individual. Influenced by concepts in media archaeology and critical theory, he reinterprets musical lineages as living, evolving narratives rather than fixed representations. The collaboration with Trio Accanto, renowned since 1994 for their contributions to chamber music, alongside the cutting-edge capabilities of SWR Experimentalstudio, further enriches this album.

*Personal Best* serves as a profound commentary on artistic legacy, the fluidity of time, and the intricate relationship between tradition and innovation. Through this release, Eivind Buene continues to push the boundaries of contemporary music, offering listeners a deep, reflective experience that resonates with the complexities of life.
