Olly Alexander announces his album Polari, out February 7, 2025. Hear the lead single ‘Cupid’s Bow,’ available now.

Olly Alexander has officially unveiled his first solo album, Polari, set to release on February 7, 2025, through Polydor Records. Along with the announcement, he has released the album’s first single, ‘Cupid’s Bow,’ giving fans an early taste of what’s to come.

The album’s title, Polari, refers to a coded language historically used by marginalized groups, including LGBTQ+ communities.

For Olly, the concept feels deeply personal. His portrayal of Richie in It’s A Sin brought many of these ideas to the surface, prompting him to reflect on his own journey of self-discovery and expression.

Co-produced with Danny L Harle, ‘Cupid’s Bow’ showcases Olly’s love for bold electronic sounds and club beats. The song touches on themes of desire, intimacy, and the ways people seek connection in a complicated world. Olly’s work often reflects his fascination with both past and present queer culture, and this track is no different—it draws from a blend of mythology and contemporary encounters, all set to a driving club rhythm.

Polari marks a turning point in Olly’s career, as he steps away from his work with Years & Years to release music under his own name. The album draws heavily from 80s avant-garde pop music, a period known for its boundary-pushing artists who made their way into the mainstream despite challenging conventions.

Olly has taken full creative control of Polari, crafting not only the music but also the visuals that accompany it. Drawing inspiration from the anarchic style of Derek Jarman, the project features a bold aesthetic that enhances its narrative. Olly has even written a short play to accompany the album, adding another layer of storytelling to the release.

At its core, Polari is a pop album about the need to belong, the pursuit of love, and the importance of meaningful connections—a message that transcends time and speaks to universal human experiences.
